Frida Kahlo beat all odds to become one of the world's most revered artists. Her independence and tenacity for survival continue to inspire followers worldwide. As a child, Frida was stricken with polio, which left her with a permanently deformed leg. As a teenager, a bus accident broke her spinal column, collarbone, ribs, and pelvis. She suffered several fractures and her right foot was dislocated and crushed. During her long and painful rehabilitation, boredom forced Frida to teach herself to paint. She laid bare her soul on canvas after canvas, fascinating and shocking the world with her fiercely unique artistic vision. Frida's life took place during a time of massive social and political upheaval. The Mexican Revolution brought dramatic change to Mexico and occurred just three years after Frida she was born. A new sense of Nationalism spawned a cultural renaissance of cultural renewal that glorified Mexico's native roots. From the way she dressed and behaved to the way she decorated her home, Frida embodied in every way the social, economic and political climate of the time. She was a member of the Young Communist League, an organization founded and led by her husband muralist Diego Rivera. Frida and Diego expressed her their political and social views in their art. Her last public appearance was at a demonstration protesting C.I.A. intervention in the overthrow of leftist President Jacobo Arbenz of Guatemala. She died seven days later on July 13, 1954, at the age of 47. |
